Residents of Gunterbrink are usually awaiting trial or for someone to decide what to do with them. Gunterbrink also serves as a holding cell, or drunk tank, for soldiers who might need some time to “cool off.” Occasionally, political prisoners or those seeking asylum are also held here.
Very few long-term residents are jailed in Gunterbrink. Hessen punishments for crimes usually involve public shaming, maiming, enslavement, or exile, but rarely lengthy imprisonment. That said, it’s not unheard of for someone’s paperwork to “get lost” so they might enjoy an extended stay.
